    Scarf-related injuries at a major trauma center in northern India

    Purpose: Scarf is a long loose piece of cloth worn around the neck and shoulder. Despite cultural association of this apparel, it is part of numerous injury episodes of varying enormity. Entanglement of loose scarf in spoke wheels of bike, tricycle, belt driven machines like sugarcane juice machine, thresher, grinding machines, etc is observed both in social and industrial milieu. This study aims to investigate the scarf-related injuries at a major trauma center in northern India. Methods: From June 2013 to May 2015, a hospital-based prospective observational study was done in patients who presented to a level 1 trauma center in northern India with the mode of injury involving scarf around the neck. Demographic profile, mode of trauma, contributing factors, injury pattern, and the early management as well as early complications were recorded. Results: There were 76 injuries directly related from scarf with the mean age of patients being 32.4 years. The most common primary factor involved was rotating wheel of motorbike/tricycle (46.1%), followed by belt driven machines (28.9%). The spectrum of injuries was diverse, including minor abrasions or lacerations (53.9%), large lacerations (15.8%), fractures and spine trauma (18.4%), mangled extremity and amputations (7.9%) and death (3.9%). More severe injury patterns were noted with belt driven machines. Conclusion: Scarf-related injuries constitute a sizable proportion of trauma, with varying degrees of severity. Devastating consequences in significant proportion of cases dictate the call for a prevention plan comprising both educational and legislative measures. Urgent preventive measures targeting scarf-related injuries will help reduce mortality and morbidity

    Data-driven decision support systems have been used more and more in e-governance as a result of the digital revolution. In order to improve the efficacy and efficiency of policymaking, this research article investigates the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches into e-governance systems. Governments can access enormous volumes of data, and AI algorithms are used to analyze and extract insightful data that enables decision-making based on facts. The article emphasizes the advantages of using AI in the e-governance space while formulating policy. Decision support systems can analyze and understand complicated information by utilizing cutting-edge machine learning and data analytics approaches, revealing trends, patterns, and correlations that would be challenging for human analysts to manually find. As a result, decision-makers in government may make well-informed choices based on impartial research and data. The paper also examines the difficulties and factors to be considered when implementing AI in decision support systems for e-governance. With an emphasis on the significance of responsible AI governance frameworks, ethical issues, including algorithmic bias, transparency, and accountability are addressed. The article also explores the effects of incorporating AI into decision-making processes, including potential sociopolitical effects and the requirement for stakeholder participation and public confidence. The results of this study show how data-driven decision support systems may revolutionize e-governance policies when equipped with AI technology. Governments may enhance their decision-making processes and the outcomes of governance by using the power of big data and sophisticated analytics. This will lead to better public service delivery.</p

    Assessment of Genetic Variability for Fruit Nutritional Composition in the Ex-Situ Collection of Jujube (Ziziphus spp.) Genotypes of Arid Regions of India

    Jujube or ber (Ziziphus spp.) is one of the most important fruit crops of India&rsquo;s arid and semi-arid regions because of its high adaptability to resource constraints hot (semi)arid region. Jujube is a rich source of minerals, vitamins and dietary antioxidants to arid zone dwellers, where it is known as poor man&rsquo;s apple. Given the present rising trends in discovering and exploiting plant-based health-promoting compounds, it is imperative to know the extent of variability with respect to fruit nutritional compositions present in the jujube germplasms. In this study, we assessed genetic variability for fruit nutritional and functional quality traits in eighteen jujube accessions belonging to three species (Z. mauritiana, Z. rotundifolia and Z. oenoplia) from an ex-situ collection from Indian arid and semi-arid regions in two consecutive fruiting seasons (2020-21 and 2021-22). Results revealed significant variability among eighteen jujube genotypes for important fruits physico-biochemical parameters. The IC 625864 (Z. oenoplia) identified as a superior accession for fruit antioxidant potential with having high levels of total phenols (256.2 mg/100 g dry weight) and total antioxidants (423 mg/100 g in FRAP). Moreover, IC 625849 (Z. mauritiana) and IC 625848 (Z. rotundifolia) were other genotypes containing high levels of phenols and total antioxidant (FRAP). Thus, while aiming for simultaneous improvement for total antioxidants with phenols, IC 625848, IC 625849 and IC 625864 genotypes can be considered as valuable resource for jujube fruit quality improvement program. Further, the high levels of phenotypic variance with high genotypic variance coupled with high heritability and genetic advance particularly for total antioxidants, total phenols, and ascorbic acid contents in fruits, indicating them to be considered as reliable biochemical markers to identify the productive genotypes having higher amounts of dietary antioxidants. Depending on the identified genotypes for their richness in the particular phytonutrients, these can be exploited either for table purpose or biofortification of other products, or using in jujube breeding program for quality improvement

    Population Structure of a Worldwide Collection of Tropical Japonica Rice Indicates Limited Geographic Differentiation and Shows Promising Genetic Variability Associated with New Plant Type

    Abating the approaching yield plateau in rice requires taking advantage of potential technologies that requires knowledge on genetic diversity. Hybrid breeding, particularly in indica rice, requires the recruitment of large genetic variability from outside because the available genetic diversity of the cultivated pool has already been utilized to a great extent. In this study, we examined an assembly of 200 tropical japonica lines collected worldwide for population genetic structure and variability in yield-associated traits. Tested along with 30 indica and six wild rice lines belonging to India, the tropical japonica lines indicated great phenotypic variability, particularly related to new plant type (NPT) phenology, and formed six clusters. Furthermore, a marker-based characterization using a universal diversity marker panel classified the genotype assembly into four clusters, of which three encompassed tropical japonica lines, while the last cluster included mostly indica lines. The population structure of the panel also revealed a similar pattern, with tropical japonica lines forming three subpopulations. Remarkable variation in the allelic distribution was observed between the subpopulations. Superimposing the geographical sources of the genotypes over the population structure did not reveal any pattern. The genotypes sourced closer to the center of origin of rice showed relatively little diversity compared with the ones obtained from other parts of the world, suggesting migration from a common region of origin. The tropical japonica lines can be a great source of parental diversification for hybrid development after confirming the presence of widely compatible genes

    Congenital rubella syndrome surveillance in India, 2016–21: Analysis of five years surveillance data

    Background: In India, facility-based surveillance for congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) was initiated in 2016 to estimate the burden and monitor the progress made in rubella control. We analyzed the surveillance data for 2016–2021 from 14 sentinel sites to describe the epidemiology of CRS. Method: We analyzed the surveillance data to describe the distribution of suspected and laboratory confirmed CRS patients by time, place and person characteristics. We compared clinical signs of laboratory confirmed CRS and discarded case-patients to find independent predictors of CRS using logistic regression analysis and developed a risk prediction model. Results: During 2016–21, surveillance sites enrolled 3940 suspected CRS case-patients (Age 3.5 months, SD: 3.5). About one-fifth (n = 813, 20.6%) were enrolled during newborn examination. Of the suspected CRS patients, 493 (12.5%) had laboratory evidence of rubella infection. The proportion of laboratory confirmed CRS cases declined from 26% in 2017 to 8.7% in 2021. Laboratory confirmed patients had higher odds of having hearing impairment (Odds ratio [OR] = 9.5, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.6–16.2), cataract (OR = 7.8, 95% CI: 5.4–11.2), pigmentary retinopathy (OR = 6.7, 95 CI: 3.3–13.6), structural heart defect with hearing impairment (OR = 3.8, 95% CI: 1.2–12.2) and glaucoma (OR = 3.1, 95% CI: 1.2–8.1). Nomogram, along with a web version, was developed. Conclusions: Rubella continues to be a significant public health issue in India. The declining trend of test positivity among suspected CRS case-patients needs to be monitored through continued surveillance in these sentinel sites
